“THE NUMBER ONE ENEMY OF THE FINE PRINT”

That’s how Joe Longley's skills have been referred to for over three decades—and not without good cause.

As the twenty-nine year-old Chief of the Antitrust & Consumer Protection Division of the Texas Attorney General’s Office, he co-authored and nurtured the passage of the Texas Deceptive Trade Practices-Consumer Protection Act, together with the private remedies sections of the Texas Insurance Code, now found in Chapters 541 and 542.

These laws have been hailed nationwide as some of the strongest consumer protection measures ever passed by any legislature, anywhere.

His practice, both as a solo practitioner and as a partner in the firm of Longley & Maxwell, LLP (1979-2004), has focused on helping those victimized by consumer fraud and bad faith insurance practices.  He has also found time to author numerous articles and seminar papers; teach insurance law as an adjunct professor at the University of Texas School of Law;  Co-author Texas’ leading consumer law text, Texas Consumer Litigation, and serve his profession as a Director of the State Bar of Texas; a member of the District 9 Grievance Committee, and Chairman of the State Bar’s Consumer Law Section.

In 2000, he and his law partner, Philip Maxwell, were named to the Texas Lawyer’s exclusive list of 100 LEGAL LEGENDS.  Since then he has been named by the Texas Lawyer as the Number One GO-TO-LAWYER for Insurance Law in the State of Texas.

In 2004, the Texas Legislative Reference Library established the Longley-Maxwell Deceptive Trade Practices Act Collection: Legislative Archive 1973-2001.

In 2011, he was selected to receive the State Bar Insurance Sections's Insurance Legend award.

In 2021, his practice continues at 3305 Northland Drive, near Ranch Road 2222 and North MoPac - overlooking the University of Texas and downtown Austin.
